When a person has an accident while wearing a helmet they don't usually remove the helmet. Way back when I was an EMT we made sure we had an open airway and if so taped the helmet to the backboard and transported. Not only does it help secure the C spine but it allows the ER doc to see the damage to the helmet. This paints a picture for that physician of possible injuries.
What types of injuries would you suspect if a patient had to have a helmet removed? Not just C spine injuries. There are a lot more. Share your thoughts.
Here is how they remove a helmet in the ER if the person has pain in the neck while attempting to remove the helmet.
